A small, independently financed winter residency within a living Cycladic house, offering artists sustained time, personal attention and participation in an evolving curatorial dialogue between art, architecture and island life.
PANO is an independent cultural initiative based at The Artist House in the mountain village of Triantaros on the Cycladic island of Tinos, Greece. Through residencies, exhibitions and publications, PANO explores the relationship between contemporary art, Cycladic architecture, the Tinian landscape and its villages, craftsmanship and everyday island life. Each Cycle unfolds over four consecutive winter residencies. Together they form a continuous artistic dialogue that culminates a new exhibition at The Artist House, accompanied by a publication documenting the artworks, texts and conversations developed throughout the cycle. The completed exhibition and publication become the point of departure for the next cycle.
The PANO Winter Residency invites artists to spend time on Tinos during the quieter months, when the island reveals a different rhythm. Removed from the routines and demands of everyday life, they are given the distance and time to observe, reflect and develop new perspectives on both their own practice and the place surrounding them. The residency values sustained presence over rapid production. Residents are encouraged to walk, observe, listen and engage with The Artist House, the village of Triantaros, the wider island and its people. Every residency lasts a minimum of ten days, allowing meaningful relationships with the place to develop. PANO believes that time itself is one of the most valuable resources a residency can offer. Each residency welcomes a maximum of three resident parties. This scale reflects the architecture of The Artist House and creates an intimate environment where concentrated individual work naturally coexists with shared meals, conversations and informal exchange. Every resident has a private bedroom while sharing the communal spaces of the house.
Curatorial Invitation
Each residency begins with the current exhibition at The Artist House. Rather than responding to a predefined theme, artists are invited to continue an ongoing conversation. The house, its current Exhibition, its Cycladic architecture, the villages of Tinos, the landscape, craftsmanship and everyday island life form the common point of departure. Every artist contributes a new perspective through their own practice, gradually extending the dialogue begun by those who came before. The Artist House is simultaneously a holiday house, artist residence, studio, exhibition space and place for conversation. Throughout the year it alternates between hospitality and cultural production, allowing both to strengthen one another. Its restored Cycladic architecture is not simply the setting of the residency but an active participant in the creative process.
PANO understands exhibitions not as temporary presentations within neutral gallery spaces but as site-specific interventions developed for The Artist House. Paintings, drawings, objects and installations are created in dialogue with the building itself, inhabiting libraries, fireplaces, kitchens, terraces and gardens. The architecture remains visible, becoming part of the exhibition rather than its backdrop. Over time, each residency adds another layer to an evolving body of work. Every completed cycle concludes with a new exhibition and publication, preserving the dialogue between artists, The Artist House and Tinos while providing the foundation for the cycle that follows. In this way, PANO grows through continuity rather than repetition, creating a body of work that could only emerge from this particular house, this particular island and the people who shape it throughout the year.
